UK board will offer iPad Air to incoming freshman this summer

A recent report confirms that the freshman in the colleges will be awarded an iPad Air, Apple Smart Keyboard, and Apple Pencil this summer.

On Tuesday, the UK Board of Trustees approved the measure to increase the graduation rates in the larger universities. Besides this, providing iPads to the students will also make students better connect with the campus community, according to the board members.

There have been reports that the UK is planning to spend $1.5 million to purchase iPads for the freshman in the colleges and the money that will be spent on the equipment will be taken from campus efficiency projects, according to the press release.

“Placing student success at the center of all that we do guide our work,” UK President Eli Capilouto said in announcing the initiative. “We know students’ persistence is impacted by health and wellness, financial stability, academic preparation, and belonging. Through leveraging the power of technology, we can address these obstacles across multiple platforms with a cutting-edge digital suite of tools — beginning with providing iPad to incoming students,” UK President Eli Capilouto added.

The press release also mentioned that the iPads that will be provided to the students would be equipped with apps that will help students achieve good scores in academics. The press release said that more than 700 freshmen would be given the iPads following they will participate in the programming in the coming summers.

“Our students will use iPad Air throughout their four years and in virtually every aspect of their lives,” Provost David Blackwell said. “Our goal is to best maximize the effectiveness of that technology — in the classroom, in preparation for a first career or starting a business, and creating a community for our students’ success.”
